“The Sacrifice” (1992) is a large (30″x40″) acrylic painting of a nightmarish landscape of ritual death in sumptuous blue hues. In this vertical scene, a couple sits somberly with their dead child, in the dark, atop an alter at the top of a small hill overlooking their tin-paneled shack. A television set inside the shack is visible, where the entire painting is repeated on the screen. In the distance, a hill-top shows the scene of ritual death repeating itself.

The 2019 Radius 50 exhibition, presented on the centennial anniversary of the Woodstock Artists Association & Museum (WAAM), is the third presentation of a continuing series that offers a survey of contemporary art from the mid-Hudson/Catskill region. Curated by Cathleen Chaffee, Chief Curator, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, this is Jeffrey Wiener’s second year participating in the Radius 50 exhibition.
